For example, avocados may be healthy but they are high in calories. Therefore, while you are aiming to lose weight, avoid high energy foods. Your weight loss diet menu has to be workable, affordable and something your family wont sabotage. The best way to ensure this is to make it a healthy menu for the whole family. Dont call it a diet. Tell the family that they are going to be eating healthier. This puts many people at risk for developing life-threatening diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. Many of these people want to lose weight, but are either unsuccessful on whatever diet they choose, or just dont know where to start. The fact is, which diet you go on is not important; its just that you control what you eat and exercise. Even factoring genetic differences into the equation, Americans weight gain can be decreased simply with portion control and increased physical activity. The bottom line is if you eat more calories that you burn, you will become overweight. Dietary habits have changed in the last 25 years, mostly due to eating more. Portion sizes have gotten larger, both in restaurants and at home. In fact, the most commonly available food portions exceed the USDA standards. Most foods now are available in larger portion sizes than they were in the 1970s. In 1977, salty snacks, hamburgers, and soda comprised 18.1% of all calories consumed; this number increased to 27.7% in 1996, and continues to rise. Specifically, salty snacks increased 93 calories, soft drinks 49 calories, hamburgers 97 calories, French fries 68 calories, and Mexican food 133 calories, when comparing portion sizes between the two years. These statistics are especially important when you consider that ten additional, unexpended calories consumed per day result in an extra pound of weight put on per year. One thing must be made clearthere is a difference between portion sizes and serving sizes. Portions are what we actually eat; servings are what the FDA food labels are based on. The key to portion control is to make your portions equal to servings. To do this, you must take the time to eyeball the serving sizes when you eat. Some general analogies are: –A deck of playing cards or a computer mouse = one serving (3 oz.) of meat, poultry, or fish. –Half a baseball = one serving (1/2 cup) of fruit, vegetables, pasta, or rice. –Your thumb = one serving (one ounce) of cheese –A small hand holding a tennis ball = one serving (1 c.) of yogurt or chopped fresh greens It is easier to control portion sizes at home with a few simple steps. First, measure individual servings onto plates or bowls for a while, so you know what a serving should look like. Second, avoid serving food family style. Dish up plates with appropriate portions in the kitchen, and dont go back for seconds. Serve on smaller platesit will trick your mind into thinking you are eating more. Never eat directly out of the bag or carton, as you will have no idea how much you are eating. Put the serving size onto a plate or in a bowl, and put the rest away. During the holiday months, as we are eating more and more often, reduce your portions by an additional 50% at holiday meals to avoid weight gain. At cocktail parties, eat just what you put on your plate, instead of grazing at buffets. In restaurants, you must also control portions. Avoid fast food restaurants altogether. They have been shown to serve the biggest portions. Also avoid all-you-can-eat buffets; people think they need to eat more to get their moneys worth. When eating out, ask for half or smaller portions. If you do get a large portion, immediately measure out the correct serving size, ask for a doggie bag, and put the rest aside. There is no need to go on a fancy, difficult, or fad diet to lose weight, as long as you pay attention to what goes in your body, and stay active to burn those calories up. It is surely apparent to even the most casual observer that the selection of small batch, or micro brewed, beer has grown steadily for many years. Early on in the craft brewing revival it was widely speculated that the microbrew revolution was merely a fad and once over, factory beers would once again be the only beer left standing on the shelves. But these smaller brewers have not only survived, they have thrived and revitalized many brewing traditions nearly lost forever. What has emerged is rather amazing. When you travel the United States and sample beers over a wide geographic range, patterns emerge in the beer styles and flavors you sample. These brewing tendancies are based on the history of beer making in the region, the availability of ingredients, and even the climate of the area and its effect on the demand for various beer styles. Let’s look at some of the broad regions of the country and what you can expect in the general styles of beers. While this exercise sheds some light on how each region has evolved, it is by no means an absolute reference. There are many wonderful exceptions to every generalization. North East New England has roots that run to the very beginnings of when Europeans first settled North America, and one of the first traditions these settlers brought with them was brewing. Many of our founding fathers not only enjoyed a brewed libation, they often made their own. One of the biggest craft brewers even takes its very name from a famous patriot and brewer from the American Revolution. The microbrew revolution has not traveled far from its heritage, and you will find almost exclusively beers made in the English tradition. This is ale country, and most brewpubs even have the traditional hand pulled beer engine offering true cask conditioned ales at cellar temperatures. While English ales rule in the North East, a few renegades are offering Belgian style ales. These beers are very traditional in their hops and malt balance, smooth and very drinkable. Midwest Many Germans migrated during the 1800’s to the Midwest in search of farm land and work in the booming cities. With them they brought a long tradition of brewing cold fermented lagers from their homeland of Germany, Bavaria, Poland, and other middle European countries. True to form, this portion of the country still has some of the best lagers to be found in the world. It is this part of the country where brewing survived during prohibition and then blossomed after its downfall. The United States largest brewers are still in the Midwest, but they are no longer alone. The beer selection you will primarily find here focuses on lighter beers that have been cold fermented and offer crisp clean colors, the floral and citrus aromas of Noble hops, and little in the way of estery yeast by-products. The exception to this rule is the amazing bounty of aromas you may find in a glass of traditional Hefeweizen, or wheat beers with the yeast left unfiltered. South Settled mainly by the French, the south and Gulf Coast has little in the way of a brewing history. The very warm climate made growing malt and hops nearly impossible, and fermenting in this heat is unpredictable. As such, the South does not have many brewpubs and Micros in order to define their space. With the advent of refrigeration, and the ease of shipping ingredients now, there are some great brews beginning to take shape. So perhaps it would be better to wait until more brewing traditions have been created before pigeon-holing this newcomer to the brewing scene. One thing that is noticeable is the effect hot weather has on the beer drinkers desire. Lighter beers served ice cold are in much greater fashion than the heavier and warmer ales served by their neighbors to the North. Mountains The mountains of Colorado, Nevada, and Idaho are especially noted for unparalleled skiing. Along with skis, vacationers often bring a hearty thirst worked up from multiple trips down the mountains. Here an ever-growing brewpub scene offers some of the most varied selections in the country. It is almost like the brewers of the mountain region reflect the many expectations brought by visitors from every corner of the world. Here you will find German lagers, English Ales, and American originals all served side by side. But one characteristic that begins to shine through comes from the proximity of the hops growing region in the Pacific Northwest. Beer here has a distinct extra dose of hops that make them All American. Instead of using hops imported from Europe, beer is most often embued with American varieties descended from traditional hops of the world. West Coast and Pacific Northwest The West Coast is mostly affected by the very close US center of hops growing in Oregon and Washington states. Beer styles here are most certainly American. The Pacific Northwest is also the heart of barley growing in the United States, so it is no surprise that the density of micro brewed beer is higher here than most anywhere else in the country. And every brewery or brewpub offers many styles with assertive hops; in the kettle for bitterness as well as large amounts of dry hops in the barrel for aroma. Most styles are American adaptations of German or English traditional brews, adapted for the cool wet weather and utilizing the abundance of local ingredients. While throughout the world there are literally dozens of styles of beer, relatively few are brewed in any one region of the United States. Each area has been influenced by climate, availability of ingredients, and tradition, to develop a limited number of distinct beer offerings. You dont need every customer in the world! You need the ones who are a good match for YOU. The more specific you are, the more effective your marketing campaign will be. But, lets take this concept one step further. You can develop specific strategies that will attract your DREAM customers. These are the people who are best suited to purchase your product or service. A dream customer is someone who: You want to work with and enjoy. For example, if youre wild about horses, why not specialize in the riding industry? Needs and values the product or services you provide. Is willing and able to pay what you need to charge. Views you as an important resource - an expert. Has problems and goals you care about. Is loyal to your business and not easily swayed by competitors. Is delighted to do business with you! I can hear you asking: “Is it really possible to attract dream customers?” The answer is a resounding YES! The key is to absolutely know what sets you apart and to make a DIFFERENCE for your customers. In all of your marketing materials, be professional, creative, and consistent. And, always focus on the exciting benefits you offer to your customers. Dont fall into the trap of using boring feature-focused marketing phrases. Here are some examples of boring, feature-focused marketing: We provide excellent customer service. Our firm has been around for 25 years. Were a full-service company. The XYZ product is the best of its kind. Why is this boring marketing? Because there is nothing unique or remarkable about these statements. They focus on features, not benefits. And, they are the exact same messages your competitor is using. Yes, these sentences may be true. However, they do nothing to set your business apart. These phrases are not going to magnetize your dream customer. Instead, you have to THINK like your customers. Meet their specific needs and solve their unique problems. In your marketing materials, tell them about the unique benefits your company provides. Make sure your business is memorable. If your customers cant remember you, they cant tell others about your services or products. Examples of benefit-based statements to attract your DREAM customers: Sales Trainer: “We will take the fear out of selling.” Cosmetic Dentist: “A smile makeover can make you look years younger.” Mortgage Company: “Well find the right loan for you at the best price.” These statements work because they are focused on what a customer will get. They solve a problem. And, they show an understanding of peoples challenges and plans for the future. If you want to be a magnet, ask your current customers what they like about you. Also, ask them what you can do better. Feedback is a great way to build your dream customer base. Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression. So, be proactive in your marketing. What do your current marketing materials say about your company? Are they creative? Do they look professional? Is your branding consistent and based on a theme? If you answer “no” to any of these questions, your marketing may not be working to effectively pull in your dream customers. ACTION ITEM: Write down the characteristics of your DREAM customer and then write down the unique ways your business can meet their needs.
